Zondi Street Sports Field Upgrade

The rich history of particular rugby as a sport and its impact under Apartheid is noteworthy. Various and prominent players in the region originates from New Brighton. Being the start of medium-term investment a derelict sport field in Zondi Street was selected for upgrading through a public process. This section of the township lacks proper sport facilities hence the decision to have the sports field upgraded for the Stinging Bees Rugby Club that do not have facilities and therefore cannot play ‘home-games’.

This will further assist nearby schools as well that would want to make use of such facilities. MBDA’s commitment of approximately R2 million will therefore to overhaul the playing field and establish grass, to fence it appropriate to use, to build change-rooms and to erect spectator stands. A visionary Ward Councillor, with the assistance of a Community Steering Committee will assist the MBDA to ensure community participation and beneficiation in the project.

Singaphi Road Environmental Upgrade

The Singaphi Road Environmental Upgrade is one of the projects initiated in the area by the MBDA. Singaphi Road connects Ferguson road to the famous Red Location Museum. Through intensive public participation the community has been instrumental in deciding the kind of environmental upgrade that should go ahead.

The project includes, surfacing of road, upgrade of parks, creation of cultural precincts, street furniture and public art and road safety features like cycling lanes and traffic calming circles.
